Meeting with Pascal Lamy
EuroCham Myanmar had the pleasure to join the EBOWWN meeting with Pascal Lamy, former Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The meeting was covering the latest affairs for the EU on geopolitics and geo-economics in the changing world order of multilateralism. Mr. Lamy mentioned that “this is the first time since WWII that we have had a protectionist US president – US-China, US -EU, US-India all have problems. (..) There has been a tremendous intensification of trade which cannot really be rolled back. (..) Dealing with Trump’s tariffs and protection will not be easy. Trump’s preference for bilateral- rather than multilateral-agreements is a step backwards” according to Mr. Lamy. He also mentioned that 80 % of EU growth in the next 20 years will come from exports. (..) We need to make multilateral agreements work (..).” Mr. Lamy also mentioned that WTO has many defects as it hasn’t changed since 90’s and that the problem now mostly concerns China; “(..) China is not cheating – the rules are not up to scratch. (..) “There is less reason to distinguish between developed countries and developing as there has been a general improvement across the board.”
