European Union to Myanmar announces emergency cash fund for garment workers
On Wednesday 8th April, the European Union has announced the creation of a €5 million [almost 8 billion Myanmar Kyat] emergency cash fund named “Myan Ku” to support thousands of Myanmar garment workers who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 crisis is disrupting the global garment supply chain, hit by the lack of imported raw materials, suspended demand worldwide, and the risk of contagion at the garment workplace.
Myan Ku “Quick Assistance” Fund is a €5 million (7.9 billion kyat) rapid response cash fund to support the mostly female garment workers from across Myanmar who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 crisis. Quick and unbureaucratic cash payments will help workers pay for food and avoid evictions.
