Meeting between Department of Marine Administration and EuroCham Myanmar Logistics Advocacy Group
On Wednesday November 11th, Department of Marine Administration (DMA) and EuroCham Myanmar, including its Logistic Advocacy Group member, Uniteam Marine held a virtual meeting to discuss the crew movement challenges for Myanmar seafarers. Currently, there are many seafarers, who are still waiting for official permits to come back to Myanmar. Many of them have not left their vessels for over a year.
The Director General of the Department of Marine Administration (DMA), U Soe Naing highlighted the repatriation challenges that Myanmar seafarers currently face along with the visa restrictions, and overall impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain industry in Myanmar. The Uniteam Marine representatives shared their concerns in terms of the cost of facilitating the movement of Myanmar seafarers due to COVID19 restrictions, as well as highlighted the human cost in terms of health and wellbeing of the seafarers. Both parties agreed on the importance of recognizing Myanmar seafarers under the essential workers status, as well as strive for priority access to the vaccine, once it is available. The meeting also emphasized the urgency of solving visa situation for the seafarers, stranded in various European countries.
The meeting was then concluded by EuroCham Myanmar’s Executive Director, Karina Ufert, highlighting the ways in which EuroCham Myanmar can collaborate with DMA and support this matter by engaging with the relevant government stakeholders, including the COVID-19 Control and Emergency Response Committee, to support easier movement of Myanmar seafarers, and engaging with the EU embassies to facilitate repatriation of Myanmar seafarers. The group agreed to continue cooperation on the subject of strengthening a dialogue to support the development of maritime logistic in Myanmar.
The meeting participants included Director General U Soe Naing, Director and Deputy Director of Seafarer division, U Chan Myae, and U Chan Nyein Kyaw, from DMA, Chairman Captain San Oo, Vice Chairman Captain Htun Oo, Secretary General U Kyaw Myint Oo and Vice Secretary General Captain Tin Oo, from Myanmar Seafarer’s Employment Services Federation, the representatives from Uniteam Marine along with the EuroCham Myanmar Team.
