The events, which followed the declaration of the State of Emergency on 1st February, had a devastating effect on Myanmar’s growing garments sector and hindered the recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic. Many companies believe that exit will significantly negatively impact hundreds of thousands of workers and their families. At the same time, it is evident that heightened human rights due diligence, taking into account the impacts of political uncertainty on the sector, is essential in informing their practices and, eventually, sourcing decisions. This session will update the current situation and how companies and other stakeholders collaborate to identify heightened human rights risks and prevent and mitigate them.
