MYANMAR STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Webinar

The ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute Myanmar Studies Programme invites two expert analysts to assess the state of Myanmar’s economy after the devastating earthquake that struck central Myanmar in March. The World Bank estimates the earthquake’s economic impact to be USD 10.97 billion and that recovery and reconstruction costs will exceed direct damage estimates. In addition to direct impacts on the Mandalay region, UNDP reports that urban poverty in Yangon has soared from 10% in 2017 to 43% in 2023. More than 2.7 million people are now struggling with insecurity, job loss & rising costs. Many are nervous about the impacts of the ILO’s recently adopted Article 33 resolution on Myanmar. How did local and international companies react to the quake? And what is the economic mood, three months after the quake?
