EuroCham Myanmar’s Annual General Meeting 2024

Dear Members, Partners, and Friends of EuroCham Myanmar,

As we close out 2024, we want to take a moment to thank you for your trust and partnership. This has been another year of navigating uncertainty, fostering resilience, and ensuring that EuroCham remains your trusted resource for actionable, on-the-ground advice.

At our AGM on December 27th, we reflected on the year’s achievements, financial sustainability, and shared plans for 2025. Your continued engagement drives our efforts, and we remain focused on supporting you as you plan and execute your business strategies in Myanmar.

Why Membership Matters More Than Ever

Operating in Myanmar presents unique challenges, and EuroCham is here to ensure you have the insights, tools, and advocacy needed to succeed. By joining us, your company becomes part of a community, shaping the business environment in Myanmar while benefiting from:

  • Timely Guidance: Whether it’s navigating foreign exchange volatility or securing critical import licenses, we deliver actionable insights to help you make informed decisions.
  • Policy Advocacy: Through over 48 advocacy meetings and 15 position papers in 2024 alone, we’ve tackled issues ranging from regulatory clarity to trade facilitation, ensuring your concerns are heard locally and internationally.
  • Sustainability Leadership: Initiatives like MADE in Myanmar and our HR Working Group help members align with global sustainability standards and prepare for upcoming regulations like the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

Navigating Uncertainty with Relevant Advice
This year, we focused on providing the most relevant and actionable support to help you adapt to challenges:

  • Import License Facilitation: Collaborating with stakeholders, like UMFCCI, we secured expedited approvals for lifesaving medicines and critical inputs for agriculture, minimizing operational disruptions.
  • Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD): From tailored briefings to strategic initiatives like MADE in Myanmar, we’ve supported companies in staying ahead of global expectations on human rights and sustainability.
  • Legal and Regulatory Updates: Our concise updates on key developments, like the People’s Military Service Law and use of Corporate VPN, equip you to plan with relative confidence.
  • Putting the Spotlight on Renewable Energy: Building on the expertise from our Energy Group members and the World Bank, we conducted an event with practical recommendations for stakeholders to improve the uptake of the solar energy.
  • Curbing Parallel and Counterfeit Imports: We produced two evidence-based papers on the state of illicit trade in consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture sectors, which highlighted key issues and recommendations.

Building Resilience Together
In addition to addressing immediate challenges and keeping you informed through our Daily Briefings, we’ve launched initiatives to strengthen your operations and long-term resilience:

  • Advocacy Focus: Our efforts on issues like regulatory clarity around import license facilitation have had a measurable impact, demonstrating the power of collective action.
  • Launching HR Working Group: Bringing together 47 companies, this group addresses workforce challenges and has launched Myanmar’s first private-sector-led Inflation and CPI Tracking Survey.
  • International Engagement: Through dialogues in Brussels, Paris, Geneva, as well as ASEAN engagement and membership in EBO Global Network, we’ve ensured that Myanmar’s responsible businesses remain part of the global conversation.

Looking Ahead to 2025
As we approach EuroCham Myanmar’s 10th anniversary, our commitment to you remains steadfast. In 2025, we’ll:

  • Launch the EuroCham Myanmar CPI Index, offering members actionable insights into economic trends.
  • Launch of the EuroCham Myanmar Talent Programme to create pathways for Myanmar youth to join the European companies.
  • Strengthen our advocacy on systemic challenges, amplifying your concerns locally and internationally.
  • Host signature events like the MADE Buyers’ Forum in January 2025, bringing international retailers to Myanmar.
  • Expand support for HRDD and responsible business conduct, ensuring you stay ahead of emerging EU regulations and global best practices.
  • And … Celebrate our 10th Anniversary celebrations to deepen collaboration and showcase the strength of responsible businesses in Myanmar.
